Cool Facts About Cat Fighting
When cats engage in what looks like a vicious battle—hissing, yowling, and swatting—they’re often following a secret code of “ritualized aggression” – ritualized fighting is when animals use a range of behaviours as posture or warning but without engaging in serious aggression or fighting, which would be expensive in terms of energy and the risk of injury.

Unlike many other animals, domestic cats have evolved to avoid all-out physical confrontations whenever possible because injuries could leave them vulnerable in the wild. Instead, they rely heavily on bluffing, loud vocalizations, and exaggerated body language (like arched backs, puffed-up fur, and sideways poses) to intimidate opponents without actual combat. Researchers believe this behavior helps them conserve energy and reduce risk, as most “fights” end when one cat backs down after realizing the other isn’t backing off. Interestingly, neutered males and female cats are far less likely to engage in serious fights than unneutered toms, who are more territorial.
