2018 Interview Summary (All About Him)
His interest began in junior high school while singing on a school excursion. On a bus ride he sang different song one of them was “Yama no ninkimono” a popular Japanese song. One of the words featured “Yodel” he was stunned at this word but soon puzzling all together to get its definition. He later joined a chorus club, sought out rare records of Bavarian yodeling, and practiced while hiking in the mountains to strengthen his voice at 18 in college. At age 26 not finishing university after years of performing in Japan, Takeo moved to Augsburg, Germany in 1973 due to his yodeling club “Alpine Yodeling Friends” being located there.
Takeo began learning German from one of his university friends in the club where she encourage him to stay in Europe. After awhile, her friends friend was a bandleader which he preformed Yodeling and gotten some attention and compliments from his vocal. From there on he meet Franzi Lang “The King of Yodelers” which got his approval.

He relocated to Switzerland, where he performed at festivals and restaurants, eventually securing a work visa and becoming a professional yodeler. One of his friends he met a Japan living in Zurich encourage him to yodel on a huge festival which got people loving it. Later, at a restaurant he performed on stage yodeling in front of hundreds of people this is where he got his first show for them to perform and appeared on Swiss TV program, radio interviews, and a company contract deal. He released his first LP in 1978.
Problems came up when his tourist visa began expiring, he kept on thinking “How can I stay longer in Switzerland?” He then became a student to study translation where he got his resident permit for one year. He loved what he was doing, got the confidence to quit his job to finally sing, getting his work visa. Finally, he can stay in Switzerland.
Then, another problem came. His first record wasn’t selling great thinking to himself “A Japanese yodeling in Switzerland? It wasn’t real” All his records and cassette tapes he had to sell them after his shows becoming his own sales agent. He learned becoming a professional yodeler had limits. In 1980, he appeared on a German show where a co-host (I think) listened to Takeo cassette tapes liking his music. There he met another famous German folk singer Maria Hellwig moving back to Germany.

Memoir of the story is: Follow your dreams!
In 1981, he moved to a small town in Reit im Winkl performing at Maria Hellwig restaurant. The restaurant wasn’t big but gotten a ton of tourist to listen performing his yodeling. Then, he was on tour with Maria Hellwig gotten on television instantly becoming famous in Germany.
He was the man from Japan who can yodel yet his name wasn’t recording yet, making his decision to change his name from Takeo Ishii to Takeo Ischi (sounding more German) hopefully it can help recognized him much better by the locals.
Later Takeo Ischi became famous worldwide from his “chicken attack” song of Bibi Hendl on YouTube. Which introduced me to his yodeling career and creating a blog about him.
