CHICAGO (WGN) — Thousands of rubber ducks raced down the river Thursday for an annual event that raised funds and awareness for the athletes of Special Olympics Illinois in August 8, 2025.
What is this? – The Special Olympics is a global organization that provides sports training and athletic competition for individuals with intellectual disabilities. It aims to empower these individuals through sports, promoting physical fitness, courage, joy, and the sharing of skills and friendship. Special Olympics also focuses on inclusion, fighting for the rights and acceptance of people with intellectual disabilities.
The annual Chicago Ducky Derby kicked off on Thursday morning and crowds gathered at Pioneer Court along North Michigan Avenue as they waited to see which duck took the top prize.
Participants who purchased a duck for $10 looked on as the mass of rubber waterfowl made its way down the river and a handful of lucky donors whose ducks crossed the finish line first will be awarded one of three available prizes, including a Chevy Trailblazer, a $2,500 Cash Prize and tickets to the Cub’s W Club Chicago.
Aug. 8 (UPI) — More than 82,000 rubber ducks went floating down the Chicago River for the 2025 Chicago Ducky Derby, an annual fundraiser for Special Olympics Illinois. Organizers said more than 82,000 rubber ducks participated in this year’s derby, which raised nearly $600,000 for Special Olympics Illinois.
“Each donation supports Special Olympics Illinois programming which creates opportunities for growth, personal development, and connection through, sports, health, and leadership programs for individuals with intellectual disabilities,” – Pete Beale-DelVecchio, president and CEO of Special Olympics Illinois, said in a statement.
The ducks were removed from the river after the race and will be stored for use in next year’s event.
